The old saying, "You get what you pay for" pretty much holds true in the world of firearms. They are a good entry level pistol, and come in several grades and finishes so the more expensive models are not that much less than some of the less expensive U.S.made pistols whereas the less expensive models are in the same price range as some other foreign manufactured pistols such as the Firestorm and Llama. They cost less because the workers that make them are paid less than comparable American workers. (6) Charles Daly 1911's are made in the Philippines. If you just wish to restore it to like new with no bells or whistles you are probably looking at about $500. Since you are supplying the basic pistol I would estimate somewhere between $850 and $1,200 for a complete customization. (5) What you will pay will largely be determined by just how much work you want done, and by whom it is done. 45's such as Ed Brown, Wilson Combat, Cylinder & Slide, etc.

(4) I'll speculate that Kimber probably does not do custom work on non-Kimber pistols, as they've built their reputation on producing new pistols with their in-house parts, but there are many custom pistolsmiths specializing in turning out topnotch. The problem is to determine how you will be best served by your pistol, and best realize it's value by retaining it in it's present-less-than-satisfactory conditon, or by turning it into something you can use and will admire. They have a small "HS" stamped near the link pin hole. (2)There are many aftermarket barrels available, and even some original barrels if you wish to proceed more in the line of a restoration. They will keep the sharp edges sharp, the rounded parts round, and the letters clear. When selecting a person/company to do the work investigate a little and get someone who does quality work. During the preperation for whatever finish you choose the nicks and scratches can be removed. It is not as pleasing to the eye as bluing. It is a phosphating process, and will out-wear bluing 3:1. The original finish, kind of rough and gray-green, is called Parkerizing.

There are other finishes you might wish to also consider. It is your gun, it belongs to you, and you can darn sure fix it up if you want to! I'll try to specifically answer your questions. The Collector Crowd doesn't want to stir any of the dust of antiquity but what you have described is neither a desirable collector piece, nor apparently likely to win local shooting matches. In a lesser conditon, as you describe, it falls somewhere short of being the Mona Lisa of fine firearms. There were an awful lot of Remington Rand.
